Kindergarten is one of the most important times in a student’s education journey. For many, it is their first experience in the big world of education. From the first day of school, Kindergartners jump headfirst into their school experience as they begin learning a variety of tasks. These new tasks range from learning reading skills and completing math problems, to learning how to socialize and follow directions.
For students like Towns Fuentez at Crawford Elementary, there can be added challenges to learning how to be in a structured academic environment.
Towns is visually impaired and is learning how to navigate the world of Kindergarten with exceptionalities. Every day, Towns brings lots of smiles and loads of innovation as he navigates school and learning. Simply learning to walk around the classroom and around the school, in and of itself, could have been defeating for some. But that is not the case for Towns! You will see him working with his teachers and therapist daily, learning how to use new tools and resources to support his learning. The best part is that he has a smile on his face the whole time!
With the help of his wonderful teacher, Mrs. Pam Pilgram-Smith, his therapist, Patti Scoggins, and his awesome classmates, Towns is taking on Kindergarten exceptionally well and his learning is growing every day!
“I love learning at Crawford Elementary!" said Towns when asked about his school. Towns also says he is grateful to have great friends like his friend Edgar, pictured below, who help him navigate the school throughout the day.

Crawford Elementary Principal, Ms. Shavon Jackson says Towns is teaching their school more about perseverance than they could ever teach him! “I am in awe of his learning on a daily basis. Towns truly embodies the attributes of an innovative achiever with his ability to persevere and be creative in order to enhance his personal and academic growth.”
Towns was recognized at the December RSD Board of Education Meeting for being an Innovative Achiever! This recognition comes from the RSD Profile of the Graduate, which outlines the attributes RSD graduates will encompass when they graduate. Read more here: https://www.rsdk12.net/page/rsd-graduate
